Do you need to specialize as a wedding photographer?Or is it an option to let the wedding couple choose what style they want and aspect that you can shoot all three different styles properly? To be clear we can distinguish three styles formal-, photo-journalistic- and artistic wedding photography.
Most photographers start with the formal style because photographers are trained to take the traditional pictures without having more of an artist’s eye for photography in general. That is why this is also often the most affordable style of wedding photography. Each style has its own strengths and weaknesses, as well as costs associated with it. Artistic wedding photography is often the most expensive of the three styles.
Another style of wedding photography is the photo journalistic style, which often requires that there is more than one photographer that is hired for the event. In this style, the photographers seek to capture the event like they would any other newsworthy event. They try to capture the spur of the moment actions and emotions that occur at all stages of the wedding ceremony, as well as capturing the formal shots that are expected for the event. In this way, the true emotion of the event is preserved for all time, rather than the stiff, yet beautiful, formal poses that are done for most weddings.
Does artistic wedding photography need specialization
Artistic wedding photography is the last style that is used in wedding photography today. It is very similar to the photojournalistic style in that the photographers work to capture the wedding in a unique way so that it is not just the formal pictures that are caught. The difference with the artistic wedding photography as opposed to the journalistic style is that the artistic style tries to use different lighting and camera angles to capture the moment so that each picture ends up being its own work of art. With artistic wedding photography there are some pictures that might be taken with everyone’s shoes off, or with the groom running after the bride in an open field. There might be others where the wedding party is walking toward the camera with the sun glistening behind them.
Artistic wedding photography often costs more than the formal wedding photography since it requires that the photographer has an artist’s eye rather than just being trained to set the wedding party up in the various poses in formal photography. It means that the photographer is trained to see beauty in unique moments and is able to capture those moments on film for individuals to view for years to come, preserved in the wedding album that usually comes with the package.
Experience
For artistic wedding photography you need experience and an artistic eye and that comes only with experience. You will only be able to use your artistic insights when you have complete control over the normal techniques. So in our opinion it is best to specialize in the wedding photography you enjoy doing. When you choose artistic wedding photography make sure you are a great photographer by gaining experience.
