A lot of people think portrait photography is a very boring type of photography, but in fact it can be very interesting. As a photographer you need to get to know the person or family of whom you are making the portrait. You should capture the essence of the people you are taking a portrait of. What makes them special and unique? In this article we provide you with a few portrait photography tips that will make your photographs magazine worthy.

Portrait photography tips #1:  Back Light

Back lighting is a great tool in portrait photography; this is a great way to highlight someone’s hair. All you need to do is have someone stand between you and a light source. To take this shot even further you can shoot only the silhouette of the subject when using this portrait photography trick.

Portrait photography tips #2: Overexposure

Overexposure is usually considered a bad thing in photography but you can overexpose images and come up with beautiful pictures. When overexposing in portrait photography the effect you want is ethereal. You can use a photo editor to do this later with the image, this looks great with certain poses, particularly anything soft.

Portrait photography tips #3 Close Ups

Getting up close is a good portrait photography trick. This is perfect if there is a particular feature that you want to highlight. If you find after taking a person’s picture that you want to focus on a particular feature you can still achieve the close up effect by cropping out the rest of the picture with an image editor.

Portrait photography tips # 4: Candid

The best portrait photography is not staged. Try to capture the moment rather than have someone pose for you. Portraits are more affecting when you show what’s real. This means capturing even serious moments, portrait photography doesn’t always have to be about smiles. Experiment and don’t be afraid to take risks.

Portrait photography tips #5: Focus

Out of focus pictures can be gorgeous with the right backdrop. Even though portrait photography is about the person whose picture you are taking you can make a picture look beautiful with the right backdrop. If there is a beautiful backdrop or something in the distance that is eye catching focus on that instead of the subject of the photograph. Having an out of focus subject adds an air of mystery and you can produce some very haunting results, particularly when you choose sepia or black and white for your final pictures.

These are just a few portrait photography tips in the coming weeks and months we will provide you with many more. Always stay on the look out for photographs in magazines that you like and make an idea book out of it, that way you are never short of portrait photography tips.
